General Summary: Successfully develops student athletes in the USM Middle School girls’ lacrosse program committed to academic and athletic excellence. Leads and supports a positive, educational-based athletic program that closely coordinates with the academic and administrative leaders at the School. This opportunity could be combined with an academic or administrative position in the School.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Holds appropriate knowledge of the School’s mission, philosophy and objectives. Knows, understands, supports, and adheres to the rules, regulations and philosophies as set forth by governing lacrosse agencies, as well as University School of Milwaukee (USM), WIAA, etc.
  • Shows a willingness to establish goals, and evaluates whether these goals have been met. Demonstrates ability to offer constructive criticism to players and other staff when necessary and help to improve the area being criticized. 
  • Exerts firm, consistent, and fair discipline while being sympathetic, tolerant and patient with her/his athletes and colleagues.
  • Provides the leadership and positive attitude that produces maximum effort by participants. Shows self-control, poise and emotional stability in all areas related to coaching responsibilities including cooperation in the sharing and the use of facilities. Possesses an appropriate sense of humor.
  • Provides an example of professional, fair, honest, and ethical behavior in her/his relationship with players, staff, officials, parents, and opponents. Actively promotes student safety, dignity and respect.
  • Expresses enthusiasm about athletics while working with students, parents, and School personnel. Contributes to the School's understanding of the whole child and grows in understanding the developmental needs of the children with whom he/she works. Demonstrates Interest in athletes during the off-season as well as in their classroom efforts.
  • Communicates effectively with: media, parents, staff, support staff, faculty, other head coaches and staffs, athletic leadership team, and players.
  • Demonstrates dedication to all phases of coaching; organizes, supervises, coordinates, and evaluates practice sessions and related activities with proper attention to players' mental and physical well-being. Makes provision for pre- game as well as post-game details. Sets up the mechanism for scouting opponents. Meets team promptly for meetings, practice and games. Keeps abreast modern trends, techniques, and strategies; and applies new trends where applicable.
  • Participates annually in professional clinics, workshops or conferences, as well as reading current literature available. 
  • Understands the proper care and prevention of injuries.
  • Cooperates with all athletic department staff in the maintenance of timely and satisfactory records, budget, inventory, physicals, statistics, eligibility lists, awards, non-conference and transportation schedules, as well as keeping the Athletic Department leadership informed about unusual events.
  • Works cooperatively with the equipment coordinator in implementing an adequate system for handling equipment and uniforms, while demonstrating proper care of facilities. 
  • Accepts responsibility for supervision of the locker room and Fitness Center as required.
  • Shows a willingness to create a compelling program where roles are clearly defined and opportunities are provided for all. Recognizes contributions, and impresses upon the athletes and parents that their efforts are valued.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to foster service to others by taking part in community service so that student athletes gain confidence and self-worth while helping others.
  • Participates as a positive team member in the development and support of excellence within the Athletic Department.
  • Maximizes resources and stays abreast of new and emerging trends in technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:                                       

  • Strong knowledge of lacrosse, its operations, and equipment
  • Ability to understand developmental levels of students and apply to practice
  • Ability to competently use technology
  • Experience working with a diverse population and demanding clientele
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong degree of self-direction and motivation
  • High level of maturity, confidentiality, and assertiveness
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or related field
  • 2-4 years’ coaching experience preferred
